How to calculate your monthly expenses

Your monthly expenses are everything you spend in a typical month, including your share of costs you pay only a few times a year. To get the number right:

  1. List the fixed costs. Rent, electricity, your phone and internet plan, subscriptions: the amounts that barely change.
  2. Estimate the variable costs. Groceries, fuel, eating out and shopping change every month. Use what you actually spent last month, from your UPI history or bank statement, not what you hope to spend.
  3. Spread the yearly costs. Insurance premiums, school fees, festival spending and annual subscriptions hit hard in one month. Divide each by 12 and count that much every month.
  4. Convert everything to monthly. A daily cost × 30.4, a weekly cost × 4.33, a yearly cost ÷ 12. The calculator above does this for you.

From an estimate to the real number

An estimate is a good start, but real monthly expenses are usually higher than we think, mostly because of small UPI payments. Track one or two full months and you'll know for sure.

Tindra makes that easy. UPI auto-capture turns payment alerts from your UPI, bank and wallet apps into draft expenses you approve with one tap, and it never asks for SMS access. Reports show income vs spending, your savings rate and a category breakdown by day, week, month, 6 months or year. Then set a monthly budget for each category.
